Key elements of BPMN that can be applied to field service include:
  • Activities: Such as customer orders intake, assignment of operatives, travel to the customer site, equipment inspection, repair or maintenance tasks, and completion of service.
  • Events: Occurrences that trigger or result from activities. For example, a customer request can be represented as a start event, while the completion of service can be represented as an end event.
  • Gateways: Decision points in the process flow. They represent branching or merging paths based on conditions. In field service, gateways can be used to determine if a repair is feasible or if additional approvals are required before proceeding.
  • Data Objects: The information or data required for performing activities. In field service, data objects can include customer details, equipment specifications, service manuals, and work order information.
  • Swimlanes: Used to assign responsibilities to different roles or departments involved in the field service process. They help in clarifying who is responsible for each activity and ensure smooth coordination.
